Synopsis
Girls of Paper and Fire meets The Tiger at Midnight in June CL Tan’s stunning debut, inspired by Chinese mythology, with rich magic and an epic slow-burn romance.
In an empire on the brink of war . . .
Ahn is no one, with no past and no family.
Altan is a lost heir, his future stolen away as a child.
When they meet, Altan sees in Ahn a path to reclaiming the throne. Ahn sees a way to finally unlock her past and understand her arcane magical abilities.
But they may have to pay a far deadlier price than either could have imagined.
Ferocious action, shadowy intrigue, and a captivating romance collide in June CL Tan’s debut, a stunning homage to the Xianxia novel with a tender, beating heart, perfect for fans of The Bone Witch and We Hunt the Flame.
My Review
This book was a masterpiece.
I honestly don’t know how else to describe it. It was thrilling, fast paced, enchanting and everything I hoped to read.
An empire on the brink of war, a peasant girl with magical powers, and a lost heir who is deemed to be dead. Ahn and Altan must work together to save their land before it is too late. Altan sees Ahn as a means to an end, Ahn thinks of him to be working with Leiye. But what happens when they start to feel more, especially when their kingdom is on the edge of destruction?
This book was one of my most anticipated reads of this year and it did not disappoint!! There was angst, enemies to lovers, a sapphic side couple that were not token characters, a one cave trope, mutual pining and much more.
The story was inspired by chinese mythology and is culturally rich. The book was fast paced, so I was worried that the characters would not get time to develop but as I read more I realised it was perfect!! I loved Ahn and Altan’s characters, they do seem like the characters you’ll usually see in YA books, but they were somehow new and different. The ending of the book had me screaming and I WANT MORE.
I recommend this book to everyone and you should definitely pre-order it!!
Thank you for reading this review and I hoped you liked it!! I had also requested June for a Q&A for my blog so be sure to look out for that<3
Sending incoherent screams about Ahn and Altan,
